Self-Esteem | Self-Identity Counselling

Self-esteem and self-identity shape how you see yourself, how you relate to others, and how you navigate life.

  • Self-esteem refers to how you value and evaluate yourself
  • Self-identity involves your sense of who you are: your roles, beliefs, and sense of direction

When these feel uncertain or negative, it can lead to:

  • self-doubt or insecurity
  • difficulty making decisions
  • feeling lost or unsure of your direction
  • comparing yourself to others
  • feeling “not good enough”

These experiences are more common than many people realize.

What the Research Shows

Research suggests that self-esteem and identity are shaped over time through our relationships and life experiences.

These findings suggest that how you see yourself is not fixed – it has been learned and shaped over time.

How Self-Esteem and Identity Challenges Can Show Up

You may notice:

  • a strong inner critic or harsh self-judgment
  • difficulty recognizing your strengths
  • fear of failure or making mistakes
  • people-pleasing or prioritizing others’ needs over your own
  • feeling disconnected from your values or sense of direction
  • uncertainty about who you are, especially during life transitions

At times, you may appear confident on the outside while struggling internally.

How Counselling Can Help

Struggling with self-esteem or identity does not mean something is wrong with you. It often reflects how you have adapted to your experiences and relationships.

The way you see yourself today is not a fixed truth. It is a story that has been shaped over time, and it can be explored and reshaped.

Counselling offers a space to better understand your relationship with yourself. We may focus on:

  • identifying and understanding self-critical patterns
  • exploring how past experiences have shaped your self-perception
  • reconnecting with your emotions, values, and needs
  • building a more balanced and compassionate view of yourself
  • developing a stronger sense of identity and direction
